The Daniel Pierce Library is seeking to fill the position of Director

Direct an association library in the beautiful, rural hamlet of Grahamsville, Town of Neversink, NY. The Daniel Pierce Library Board of Trustees is seeking a library director to lead our community-oriented association library, chartered to serve the Tri-Valley School District.  The library is located in Grahamsville, NY in the scenic Catskill Mountains and serves approximately 6,500 residents and numerous summer visitors. The director reports to a ten-member Library Board of Trustees. The aspiring candidate will have the skill and experience to plan and implement new services and programs, foster community support and develop and implement a long range plan which aligns to the goals and visions of our library.

Primary Responsibilities

  • With the Library Board of Trustees, develop and implement the library budget
  • Supervise staff and volunteers with the goal of providing excellent public service; maintain a clean, safe attractive building and premises
  • Ensure collection of library materials and services meet the needs and interests of the community
  • Work with bookkeeper to administer payroll, pay bills and maintain accurate records of expenditures and revenue
  • Plan, coordinate and implement programming for all ages with assistance from staff and volunteers
  • Advocate for the library, promote programs, and generally keep the community informed about library services and resources using news releases, the website, social media and in-person opportunities
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with schools, agencies, civic and community groups, the general public and news media.
  • Research grants, and prepare applications to state and federal agencies and non-profit foundations to support the library’s mission
  • Gather usage statistics throughout the year to complete the NYS Annual Library Report
  • Review and/or develop policies and procedures for the operation of the library, including training, professional development, scheduling and annual evaluation of employees
  • Communicate regularly with the Board of Trustees; provide pertinent information at all Board Meetings, including library achievements and challenges and monthly financial reports
  • Organize and execute library fundraising events as necessary, with assistance from the Board of Trustees.

 Qualifications for the Directorship of the Library will be:

  • Minimum qualification of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university or its equivalent. Master’s Degree in Library Science, or Library and Information Science from a graduate library program accredited by the American Library Association is preferred
  • Experience with administration and management of staff in a library environment
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management experience
  • Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and technology skills
  • Ability to work effectively with library trustees, elected officials, community groups, and the general public
  • Ability to supervise and motivate library staff and volunteers
  • Experience working with community members and community organization
  • Ability to work in a dynamic library environment
  • Knowledge of current library applications, and ability to leverage cutting edge technology to keep library competitive
  • Desire to learn and gain new skills with an interest in continued professional development
  • Experience in seeking and obtaining philanthropic and public funding
  • Knowledge of foundations and management of endowment growth
